Flock of 50 life-sized pigeons, 2024, wax, dirt of the neighbourhood

Curated by Sjoerd Beijers

“Constructed in the 1950s, De Ravelijn is a residential neighbourhood in Maastricht, NL. In it’s centre stands the former ‘woonschool’ or dwelling school. This was a space for re-educating those that were declared ‘antisocial’ and relocated to De Ravelijn district from Maastricht’s city centre. Four artists reflect on how the organisation of space is tied to behavioural control, and explore how acts of division and measurement shape how we share urban spaces.”

“Helena intervenes with a flock of wax-cast pigeons, placed at intervals on ventilation ducts, inhabiting cages, and scattered throughout the building. This discarded companion species becomes a lens through which she questions how we share space, examining how power relations mediate our movement through both urban and exhibition spaces.”
